VW Split Window 1951 rebuilt to Typ 82E from late. I bought this 1951 split of a friend back in the mid 1990's because I had a dream of making my self a war time VW beetle. The car was in good condition for being an old split window. One of the main reasons I thought this was a good start-off was that no one had done any work on it before. I started the restoration project in 1996 and all the work is done between then and 2001. A lot of time and money have been put into this project and I think I can say that there are not many split window beetles around that are as rust free and rustproof as this one.
The whole front has been apart and the spare wheel well has been replaced. The heater channels / side members together with the cross members have been carefully taken of after a jig had been welded inside the car to keep everything strait. The heater channels are new parts and the cross members are shot blasted and repaired before being welded back on. This way the lower front corner of the rear inner wings are repaired in a way that is exactly the same way they were made in the first place (no funny welds here). The front door posts has been replaced and the lower outer quarter panels are also new parts. The chassis mounts in the rear inner wings has been taken off and new ones made exactly like the original and then welded back on. The whole back piece has also been taken apart and rebuilt. In other words: the whole lower part of the body has been apart and rebuilt carefully.
I am forced to sell the car because I no longer have a garage to work on it, or to keep it in.
I have made a special home page for the car so please visit:

if you want to know more and see more photos.
This is an extremely serious restoration project that is almost complete except for the doors, bonnet, engine lid and the wings. The doors and bonnet are restored but needs to be painted. The wings are original 51 chemically stripped for all the paint. These needs minor welding. The engine lid is in good shape and has not been worked on. All the other parts of the car including new glass rubber seals, comes with it. The only thing missing are the bumpers
The body shell and the floor pan are thoroughly rebuilt using only original VW parts. Even the sheet metal used is VW original. A special technique used on the car is taken from the oil business, the way they treat steel constructions that are going to be installed in the sea (salt water). It is called metalising and it is almost like warm galvanizing except for the fact that the paint never loosen and flake on the metalised surface. First the steel is shoot blasted with a certain grit sand and then zinc is sprayed, using a special spray gun where a wire of zinc is fed through and melted inside before it comes out and on to the steel plate. Another technique used is a method where all the spot welded joints are painted with primer in-between the overlapping steel plates. First the joint surfaces are shoot-blasted and welded. Then the primer is forced in between the plates using high pressure. This is done before the final shoot-blasting and metalising so the result is an extremely good protection against the elements. The primer used is of the epoxy type (also from the oil industry) and the topcoat is polyurethane.
The idea behind this car is to have a car that looks exactly like the old military off road beetle but at the same time share all the benefits of the improvements done to the beetle later on. Therefore the following modifications done:
Synchronised VW T2 transmission, dual circuit hydraulic brake system, 45mm VW T2/T3 brake shoes and drums, post 67 type side members with heater channel ducts inside.
The rear axles are type 2 with reduction boxes. These have been thoroughly rebuilt and all the ball bearings and seals are renewed.
The front beam is the original 51, shoot-blasted and metalised, with all the bushings renewed. The spindles and king pins are original factory overhauled kubelwagen with typ 3 drums, brakes and back plates (all new VW parts).
All the other parts of the floor pan like torsion rubber bushings, emergency brake cables, petrol tubing, pedal assy etc has been restored and renewed.
